Goal

This guide was developed to help identify those library resources that support direct linking.

Some digital publishers do not encourage direct linking, and build their resource URLs to actually prevent this.  Other resource providers simply did not anticipate this desire, and did not build a 'stable URL' into their software.

Direct linking may be used on class syllabi/websites, ereserves, or Owlspace to direct the reader to fulltext articles of interest to the area of study.  As a link to subscribed content (and unlike downloading PDFs for these purposes), you provide easy yet secure access to desired readings, without activating the need for copyright clearance fees.

You should respect, however, any statement you find on the fulltext article within any of our databases regarding restrictions on linking or use in classroom reserve readings.

The "Proxy Prefix"

Almost all of these stable links wil still require that the user be a) on campus, or b) include a "proxy prefix" that enabled the user to login with their NetID and password.

If you wish to build a syllabus, eresources or Owlspace link to library resources that will support off-campus access, be sure to add the "proxy prefix" to whatever stable URL you generate from these instructions

http://ezproxy.rice.edu/login?url=

Examples:

http://ezproxy.rice.edu/login?url=http://search.eb.com/

http://ezproxy.rice.edu/login?url=http://dictionary.oed.com/entrance.dtl

Students and other users will not be required to login to the proxy when on-campus (except if using the Visitor wireless network).
