Creative Commons: Assign a Creative Commons license to your work

If you are the copyright holder of your work, you can assign a Creative Commons license to indicate how you would like others to use your work. In addition to adding to text documents (e.g., Word documents, PDFs), you can also assign licenses to web content and research data (for additional information about licensing data, please see the Rice Research Data Management Team's website).

1. Decide what type of Creative Commons license you want to assign to your work. If you aren't sure what type of license you want to use, consult the Creative Commons Choose a License guide or contact Fondren's Scholarly Communications Liaison at sk60@rice.edu.
2. Once you have selected a license, you'll need to generate the license (both a human-readable and machine-readable version) to attach to your work.There are several ways to do this:
   1. Generate the license from the Creative Commons website. Copy and paste the code to your document or include the provided code on your website.
   2. Install the Creative Commons Microsoft Word Add In. This will allow you to add CC licenses to your Word docs and Powerpoint slides as you create them.
