Rice Author Open Access Fees: Journal Publisher Discounts
Publisher Discounts
Fondren Library's institutional subscription for some publishers and journals includes reduced article processing charges (APCs) for open access articles.
- American Chemical Society: Discounts for Rice authors, ACS members, and for authors in certain countries. Learn more from the ACS Author Choice page.
- Elsevier: Discounts for Rice authors as a result of negotiations with TLCUA (Texas Libraries Coalition for United Action). Publishing OA in a hybrid journal receives a 10% discount; in a gold OA journal the discount is 15%. Please see the Elsevier-TLCUA information page for more details.
- Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences: Corresponding authors from Rice may pay a discounted open access fee for "immediate open access" publication, as we have a current-year site license. Learn more from the PNAS Author Center.

BioMed Central is a publisher of open access, online, peer-reviewed journals. The portfolio of journals spans all areas of biology and medicine. Institutional membership to BioMed Central/Chemistry Central/Springer Open is provided through Fondren Library.
All original articles published by BioMed Central are made freely and permanently accessible online immediately upon publication. Authors publishing with BioMed Central retain the copyright to their work, licensing it under the Creative Commons Attribution License which allows articles to be re-used and re-distributed without restriction, as long as the original work is correctly cited.
BioMed Central levies an article-processing charge (APC) to cover the cost of the publication process. Fondren Library will pay 50% of the APC charge. Learn more on the BMC member page.
Who:
Rice scholars who are publishing via BioMed Central/Springer Open.
How:
BioMed Central journals use online submission. Detailed instructions are available online. During the submission process, an author will claim sponsorship by Rice University (Fondren Library). Fondren Library staff will be notified, and will verify that at least one author meets our criteria:
- is currently affiliated as Rice University faculty, staff, or student
- visiting scholars, alumni, or complimentary employees do not qualify for subsidy of their article-processing fees by Fondren Library.
Public Library of Science

PLOS (Public Library of Science) is a nonprofit Open Access publisher with a mission to accelerate progress in science and medicine by helping to transform research communication.
PLOS levies an article-processing charge to cover the cost of the publication process. Fondren Library will cover 50% of the cost of these fees.
Who:
Corresponding authors affiliated with Rice (contributing authors are not eligible). Alumni and visiting scholars do not qualify for coverage under this program.
