Fondren DOI Services: Home

A digital object identifier (DOI) is a unique string of characters assigned to an electronic article, book, book chapter or other digital "object." For example:  https://doi.org/10.1108/02640470610689151.

DOIs can help to increase the reach and impact of your work in several ways:

• Because a DOI is meant to never change, it provides a permanent link to your work.
• A number of journal publishers require authors to provide DOIs for any content linked to their articles (like datasets).
• DOIs help facilitate citation tracking and usage metrics.

As a DataCite member, Fondren facilitates the assignment of DOIs to library-managed content and other university-managed platforms. In most cases, the library provides this service at no cost to the Rice community.

Getting a DOI for your work is easy!

1. Deposit your work in the Rice Research Repository (R-3). Committed to long-term preservation and access, R-3 accepts a wide range of work, including research papers, datasets, technical reports, white papers, etc. You can initiate the deposit process by submitting your work here (be sure to indicate that you would like a DOI assigned to the work).
2. Request DOI assignment for content housed on non-library managed platforms. When possible, we encourage the deposit of items requiring a DOI in a library-managed platform (like R-3). However, we do recognize that there are other Rice-managed platforms that may be more appropriate for certain types of publications. Fondren will consider requests to assign DOIs to content on other campus-managed platforms on a case-by-case basis. Individuals/groups should commit to ensuring that there is long-term preservation and access to the content. Please contact Fondren Digital Scholarship Services at cds@rice.edu.
3. Manage your own DOI assignment. Appropriate for campus groups interested in integrating the DataCite API into a publishing system and/or to assign a large number of DOIs. Please contact Fondren Digital Scholarship Services at cds@rice.edu.
