Rice Research Repository: Submit your work

Submission methods

There are two ways to deposit your work:

1. Use the quick submission form. The form can be accessed from the R-3 homepage (click on "Deposit Your Work")] or on the library website.
2. Deposit your work yourself directly to R-3.

   2.  Library staff may contact you if there are questions or concerns about your submission (s).

Eligible works

In determining whether a work is well-suited for the R-3, we consider the following:

• The work must be produced or sponsored by Rice faculty, researchers, staff, or students. Undergraduate students must receive prior permission to deposit to the repository and will typically be asked to secure sponsorship from a faculty member or Rice organization.
• The work must be scholarly, educational, creative, or related to the university's mission.
• The work must be in a digital format.
• The work must be complete, permanent, and ready to be distributed. Embargoes are available if you would like to delay access to the work for a specified period of time.
• The creator/copyright owner must be willing and able to grant Rice University the right to publicly distribute and preserve the work via R³.
  • If you transferred your copyright or other reuse rights to a publisher, you may still be able to deposit a version of your work. To help determine if your journal/publisher permits deposit, please see SHERPA/RoMEO (database of self-archiving policies) or contact us using this webform.
• The library must have the capacity to preserve and sustain the work over the long-term.

  • In general, we cannot support large datasets, but we do offer expertise on identifying appropriate disciplinary repositories.

Prepare your submission

Before submitting your work to R-3, please complete the following activities:

1. Confirm that your submission meets the criteria described above.
2. Ensure that your document is accessible. The Rice Digital Accessibility Office maintains a collection of accessibility resources for frequently used applications.
3. Make your work available in a cloud service that creates a link to the file or folder (e.g., Rice Box, Google Drive, Dropbox).
4. Decide if you and a digital object identifier (DOI) assigned to your work. Generally, DOIs are assigned to works that have not previously been assigned a DOI elsewhere. Learn more about DOIs in this library guide.
5. No transfer of copyright occurs when a work is made available in R-3. But, the copyright holder does have the option to assign a Creative Commons license to their work. Review the available licenses in R-3:
   1. Creative Commons Zero (CC0): Recommended only for datasets. When you choose this license, you are waiving all rights and placing your work in the public domain.
   2. Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY): This license allows others to distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon your work, even commercially, as long as they credit you for the original creation.
   3. Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (CC BY-SA): This license allows for others to remix, tweak, and build upon your work even for commercial purposes, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under identical terms.
   4. Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivs (CC BY-ND): This license allows for redistribution, commercial and non-commercial, as long as it is passed along unchanged and in whole, with credit to you.
   5. Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial (CC BY-NC): This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work non-commercially, with credit to you.
   6. Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike (CC BY-NC-SA): This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work non-commercially, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under identical terms.
   7. Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs (CC BY-NC-ND): This license only permits others to download your work and share with others as long as they credit you, but they can't change them in any way or use them commercially.
6. Review the Non-Exclusive Deposit License, which allows Rice to distribute and preserve your work.
