I hope you had a wonderful summer! Welcome back to Houston! I’m sharing some of my summer travels with this photo from the Rosenberg Library on Galveston Island, Texas's oldest continuously operating library. It’s less than an hour away and has beautiful architecture, blending the original building completed in 1904 with some modern construction completed in the early 1970s. If you don’t have time to visit in person, please check out this short video that provides a history of this gem in our area.
The stained glass piece above is located on the library’s third floor, near the Galveston & Texas History Center, housing archival material and unique collections with many artifacts from the beginnings of the state. It was given to the library by a member of the Lykes family. The Lykes family were Galveston cargo shippers and ran Lykes Bros. Steamship Company in the late 1800s. Harold Rams of the Orco Company designed the stained glass window. Orco was a Texas branch of the St. Louis-based Jacoby Art Glass Company.
New at Fondren!
We are always on the lookout for providing new services for our patrons. This year, we added these clever laptop/tablet stands that are available for a four-hour checkout at Fondren’s Library Services Desk on the first floor. Use them to prop your electronic device and take the strain off your neck, back, arms, and eyes!
