Literatures in English: World Literatures

LION incorporates the Black Writing and World Literature collections from ProQuest. These full-text modules include over 140,000 texts from thousands of authors around the world, including many works in other languages. The databases below in this box provide more focused access to individual collections which may be accessed collectively through LION.

Short stories and folktales, including oral traditions and literary magazine selections, from Africa and the African diaspora.

Fiction, poetry, and essays from Black women writers from Africa and the African diaspora.

Poetry and fiction written in the Caribbean in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, presented in the original languages (English, French, Dutch, various Creole languages), as well as Creole dictionaries.

This collection consists of "poetry, fiction, and over 450 plays written in English and Spanish by hundreds of Chicano, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Dominican, and other Latino authors working in the United States. Among the gems of the collection are nearly 800 items (poems, novels, and plays) that have never been published before (Alexander Street Press)." Interdisciplinary collection of French texts, with an emphasis on the 18th - 20th centuries, including novels, poetry, plays, essays, letters, and treatises in literary criticism, biology, history, economics, and philosophy.

Contains access to 13 collections that explore all works printed in Europe before 1701. This includes literary works by Greek and Roman authors ranging from giants like Homer, Hesiod, Virgil, and Ovid to lesser known figures like Latin poets Persuis and Claudian.

Currently, Rice University owns access to Collections 1-10 and 13.

This resource contains primary and secondary sources for the study of the ‘Empire’ and its theories, practices, and consequences. The materials are from the late fifteenth century onward and include manuscripts, printed and visual primary sources, scholarly essays, maps, and interactive chronology.
The documents are organized in five sections: 1) Cultural Contacts, 1492-1969; 2) Empire Writing and the Literature of Empire; 3) The Visible Empire; 4) Religion and Empire; and 5) Race, Class and Colonialism, 1607-2007.

"The Kotobarabia Modern Arab Renaissance Collection is an electronic archive of books published 1820-1914 from Egypt, Syria, and other regions of the Islamic World. The collection is comprised of over 2,500 titles in the humanities and the sciences, including writings from Mahmoud Abdo, Gamal El Din El Afgahany and Rashid Reda."

Latin American Women Writers is an extensive searchable collection of prose, poetry, and drama composed by women writing in Mexico, Central America, and South America, from the 17th through the 20th century.

This collection "presents manuscripts of some of the most important works of European travel writing from the later medieval period. The chief focus is on journeys to central Asia and the Far East, including accounts of travel to Mongolia, Persia, India, China and South-East Asia... Scripta Sinica contains over 460 titles and 358,000,000 characters of materials pertaining to the traditional Chinese classics, especially those related to Chinese history. The collection continues to be expanded.

Voltaire électronique is based upon the Voltaire Foundation Oxford edition of the Complete works of Voltaire. It includes all of Voltaire's literary works. Texts which have not yet been published in the Complete works are drawn either from the original sources or from the ninteenth-century Moland edition of Voltaire's works. The database will be updated regularly with further texts from the Oxford edition as they become available.
