This collection consists of materials related to the construction of the Rice University campus from the initial engagement of the master plan architects in 1909 to the present time. Included are expense records, diagrams, photographs, news clippings, and a small amount of correspondence.
Rice University KTRU Radio records, 1962-2012, UA 011
Audio recordings and administrative files reflecting the daily business of the KTRU Radio station at Rice University. Recordings include newscasts, interviews with rock, jazz and classical musicians, Rice Presidents’ State of the University speeches and recorded live music. Administrative records include radio directors’ meeting minutes, “Gripes and Groans” books from the DJ booth, programming notes, election forms, DJ handbook, licensing information, and correspondence.
DeLange Conferences collection, 1988-2016, UA 263
The collection is composed of documents, photographic material, and electronic media that document the activities before, during, and after the DeLange conferences. The materials are in good condition and include correspondence, conference materials, marketing materials, reports, photographic material, and audio, visual, and electronic media.
Rice University School of Architecture (O. Jack Mitchell) Records, 1966-1991, UA 022
Departmental announcements, brochures, reports, course evaluations, departmental correspondence, outlines for the 1966 Kahn Lecture, and materials from the dedication of the new Architecture School facilities at Rice University, 1981. Also included are course outlines, materials, rosters, and lecture notes of the Urban Design Program taught by O. Jack Mitchell (1969-1991), as well as the program history, and initial proposal.
Rice University Lynn R. Lowrey Arboretum records, 1997-2004, UA 276
This collection consists of materials related to the Lynn R. Lowrey Arboretum on the campus of Rice University. Included are records of the inaugural plantings in 1999, news clips, meeting minutes, correspondence, planning information, and oral interviews on videotape, conducted by the Conservation History Association of Texas for the Texas Legacy Project, 2004. Also included is Charles Tapley’s presentation copy of Texas Wild Flowers by Eliza Johnston.

Early Rice Institute records, 1844-1941 (bulk 1880-1916), UA 101
These records include the original William Marsh Rice murder trial records, and the estate records of Rice, founder of Rice Institute, now Rice University. These records relate to the formation of the idea of the Rice Institute and the activities of its first Board of Trustees in the years before Mr. Rice’s death and to the Institute’s formative years just after his death. The outcomes of the legal proceedings documented in these records, which related to significant financial resources and real estate, played the critical role in the creation of Rice Institute. A small amount of Rice’s personal and business papers are also present.

The collection contains records and printed material on the early land holdings and dealings of William Marsh Rice and the Rice Institute in 45 Texas counties and 4 Louisiana parishes. The collection also contains records and printed material concerning early Rice Institute campus construction, legal matters (including judicial settlements and statements), institutional housekeeping (including receipts and invoices from 1891-1907), and campus area property and construction.

The collection includes the archive from Paul Harcombe and Sandi Elsik’s ecological research in the Big Thicket National Preserve; academic and university affairs regarding Rice University and the Ecology and Environmental Biology Department, as well as student and faculty records; Paul Harcombe’s personal documents, including his correspondence and his personal notebooks; publications, including articles from the journals of Ecology and Ecological Monographs, the Ecological Society of America and the Journal of Vegetative Science, as well as articles from the Tall Timbers Conference and numerous Texas County Soil Surveys; Paul Harcombe’s class and lecture materials; projects and proposals in which Paul Harcombe was involved; and two rolls of film containing aerial views of the Houston area.
