Take a Look at Read and Respond!
Read and Respond is an active learning feature that allows you to create assignments for students to read and annotate within Canvas.
Click here for a brief video describing Read and Respond or click here for a step-by-step tutorial to set up this feature for your class.
We welcome suggestions for purchase of library materials. Suggestions will be reviewed by a librarian against several factors, including: appropriateness of the material for Fondren Library's collection, available funding, and origin of the suggestion. Please fill out the Suggest a Purchase form.
Course Reserves encourages the use of eBooks and eResources for course reading lists. Many books already exist in eResource or eBook form. That is our first choice when receiving a request for a title to be in Course Reserves. Otherwise, we can scan any physical copy of a book, provided that Fondren Library owns the book, within the limitations of Copyright laws, to provide another option for accessing a book digitally.
OIT is implementing changes around faculty requests for VHS/DVD digitizations. Please contact your subject librarian to learn what streaming options are available for your class before requesting digitization from the course reserves team. If there are no streaming options, the librarian will help you determine if one of Fondren's VHS or DVD items may be digitized.
Faculty can build course reading lists in Canvas using Fondren’s OneSearch tool with direct links to library full text holdings.

"It has been a pleasure working with Fondren Library staff to set up digital course reserves materials for my class! Leganto is extremely easy to learn and very user-friendly, and the Access Services team has quickly responded to each of my requests, from scanning book chapters to acquiring e-books. Now more than ever, it is critical to give our students reliable access to the learning resources they need, and Access Services have gone above and beyond to help me prepare for the coming semester."

There are limitations on digitizing items for reserve due to copyright law. For more information visit the Copyright and Fair Use LibGuide.
Please limit your book digitization request to a modest portion of the book (i.e. 1-2 chapters). Less than ten percent of the book is a good target.
We prioritize and strongly encourage the use of eBooks in 2022-2023 course reserves, based on the continued desire to emphasize the health and safety among the student community as well as convenience of use.
If you wish us to scan from your personal copy of a book, please mail or bring it to the Fondren Library Circulation desk and let us know exactly what you need.
This policy has been established by the Course Reserves department and the Access Services Manager. We respectfully ask you to adhere to this policy. Any special circumstances should be brought to the attention of the Access Services Supervisor for Circulation/Course Reserves, Heidi Vieira. You can contact her at hjv1@rice.edu or at 713.348.8895
Readings for Rice University courses are placed on Course Reserves only at the request of an instructor, or by an instructor’s designated proxy.
Electronic copies of items (PDFs, videos, etc.) hosted by the library are subject to copyright law. Items will not be made available to students until the rights to do so are legally secured, and new rights must be secured each semester an item is hosted.
Materials may be added to Course Reserves at any time during the semester as deemed necessary by the course instructor or their designated proxy. Requests made during the semester are usually available within two business days (Monday-Friday.)
